If you were kidnapped in 1710...

Give me somebody who thinks they don't like history, and I'll change their mind.

It's drama. It's speculation. It's self preservation and survival. It's also emotional, passionate and risky; and layered in case studies on the human experience. When I research a primary source like this one, von Graffenried's account of the founding of New Bern, it's WILD what it exposes about human behavior. Like watching reality TV.

In this paragraph, Graffenried is faced with a moment during his abduction by the Tuscaroras where he sees an opportunity to escape -- and decides not to!

What would YOU have done in his situation?

I think I'd have made a run for it, but he makes some valid points about why he decided to stay!

(From the 1920 English translation by Vincent H. Todd)
